Dear Friends,
I recently sent out a postal mailing which you may have received. But if you did not, the text is below with some links about voting.
“As this very strange year and election cycle enters the last quarter of 2020, I am writing to tell you a little of what I think our future could look like. As you know, I suspended my campaign for much of this year so I could concentrate on our County response to the pandemic. Now I must return to campaigning to finish my re-election effort and I ask for your support. Please see my website to make a donation.
While I am thrilled to be on the same ballot as Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in November, I expect the next months to be difficult for our County and our country no matter what happens in November. I am hopeful that Democrats will win big and then truly “build back better.” I am hopeful that the nation as a whole will finally begin to address systemic disparities.
Letting the “marketplace” alone determine who gets what is not only unfair given the inequities that are baked into our systems, but it is also the road to disaster, especially for our most vulnerable workers. They are essential to providing childcare, healthcare, cleaning, food and more. If they get sick or can’t survive, we will all get sick. If they don’t have money to buy food and clothing or pay the rent, the economy will unravel for everyone. The morally right thing to do is also the economically smart thing to do. Therefore, in Arlington, as in so many places, we’ve been focusing on how to make sure people have homes to live in, food on the table, good healthcare and affordable childcare.
After the pandemic, we are not likely to go back to what was “normal.” With good leadership on the national level, we have a chance to do much better than we have. With good local leadership, Arlington is in a far better position than most to make this transition well.
I am excited at the possibility of continuing to help lead Arlington County through this difficult transition. Over the last months, I have been so grateful for my 25 years of governmental experience that I’ve needed to draw on. Many of you have supported me over those years and made that experience possible. I cannot thank you enough.
I hope you will contribute to my re-election once more. I still need to raise basic monies to cover the cost of my current campaign, which includes my campaign manager and a professional social marketing team. Their support has been invaluable and allowed me to concentrate mostly on my work chairing the County Board, which continues to be intense. Any amount you are comfortable contributing would be very helpful.
Virtual Panel Discussion
Through my newsletter and website, you will get more details about an exciting virtual panel discussion coming up in late September. It will focus on how technology is affecting both our Covid response and the national election. I don’t want you to miss it.
