Dear Friends:
Spring is around the corner. And resistance is starting to sprout in many ways and places. If you haven’t seen it, check out what the National Park Service workers did at El Capitan, the 3,000-foot peak in Yosemite. To protest the administration’s employee cuts, they hung an American flag upside down which is traditionally a sign of distress or national threat.
The deep fake video of Trump kissing Elon’s feet was quite clever. It was broadcast on every monitor in the HUD building on Monday. HUD officials couldn’t figure out how to stop it and had to manually unplug every video screen. It took them a while. Enough time for it to go viral.
And there are little things happening everywhere. I was so disgusted by how Vance and Trump treated Zelensky today, that I took my old Ukrainian flag and put it up over I-395. It probably won’t last long, but I felt I did SOMETHING. What can you do when your President is a Russian asset?
Scientist Peter Gleick has made one of the best recommendations I’ve seen. Democrats should set up a Shadow Government of experts and former heads of agencies that will hold press conferences and stand up regularly as needed to counter the lies and bad actions. I don’t use the word “policies” to describe what Trump/Musk are doing; this is not “policy” this is wholesale destruction so they (and Putin) can feast off the remains of our country. There is no policy involved. If you agree with me, let Federal and Democratic representatives and leaders know to set up an opposition government.
Scientific America noted: “Among the slew of actions that President Donald Trump has taken during his first weeks back in office has been a barrage of attacks on federal scientists and scientific funding.” A rally “Stand Up for Science” is scheduled for Friday, March 7th in D.C. and nationwide. Join us from 12-4pm. We will be located in front of the Lincoln Memorial, overlooking the Reflecting Pool. Our program will include a diverse selection of speakers, musical guests, and advocacy activities.
Yesterday’s video of USAID employees clearing their offices is particularly moving and informative about the agency’s purpose and how the cuts affect not just those workers, but also American farmers, and therefore the U.S. economy.
And if you’d like to let Federal workers know you support them and are in this area, I encourage you to drop by on Saturday, March 8 to cheer them on at the event described here at Wakefield High School.
Bringing cookies or donuts for the workers coming is also welcome. I’ll be there. We’ll keep it positive and just focus on supporting the workers. Save your angry energy (and I have it too) for a different type of rally/demonstration, of which there are sure to be many….and which I will let you know about.
As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions.
Best,
Libby
